Fancy becoming a referee?

There has never been a better time to become a referee.  For most referees who are interested in working in the minor leagues there is no shortage of appointments at all levels of minor football.

On the other hand, for those who want to make a career out of refereeing there is hardly a week goes by without Scottish officials jetting off for international appointments.  There is clear career path and those with the right attitude, abilities and determination can reach the top level of domestic and international football.

If you are interested in finding about becoming a referee, please email our Coaching Instruction team leader, Mark Doyle at instructor@edinburghrefs.com

The new entrants class is the only route to get to the top in Scottish Refereeing, so come along and give it a go!

General Course Information

Each course culminates in a written and oral exam, after which you shall be able to accept referee appointments. Upon completing your first match, where an existing member shall accompany you, you shall receive your Entrance Exam certificate and shall become a member of SFA Referees (Edinburgh & District) Association.

Refereeing requires far more than knowing the Laws of the Game. It is of course about gaining experience. Not only shall you gain experience by actively refereeing but through the Coaching and Development we offer our members at our monthly meetings which are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Marriot Hotel, Glasgow Road, 7:15pm. We are fortunate that within our ranks we have some of Scotland’s top SPL officials such as Dougie McDonald, Calum Murray, Mike Tumilty and Crawford Allan who lead monthly coaching sessions and debates on points of play.

As new members we would expect you to attend monthly meetings whenever possible.

Similarly the Association meets each Tuesday at The Hearts Academy, Heriot Watt University, Riccarton for outdoor physical training. Training begins at 8pm with changing facilities available from 7:30pm. Training is free and in order to progress in refereeing attendance at training is a requirement.
