Association Structure

The SFA Referees Edinburgh and District was formed in 1952 with the aim of bringing together all football referees in Edinburgh and surrounding districts and now includes West Lothian, East Lothian, Midlothian and the Scottish Borders.  We currently have over 300 members all of whom are registered with the Scottish Football Association (SFA).

Teams

One of the themes of the Association is “teamwork” and we have various teams that ensure we continually develop and train referees to the highest possible standards. Team Leaders are appointed and co-ordinate the work done by a great many other members who contribute valuable time and effort to the running of our Association.

Referee Instruction – Team Leader Mark Doyle

This team runs all our new entrant classes. Details of these classes can be found in the coaching of this website.

Referee Coaching - Team Leader Dougie McDonald

This team is responsible for delivering coaching at monthly meetings and is led by experienced FIFA Referee Dougie McDonald.

Development – Team Leader David McCartney

Following initial introduction to refereeing, our members can apply for formal development / supervision and the Development team will come out and watch them and give coaching / feedback on their performances. Success at this level can lead to our members being recommended for inclusion on the SFA’s “Register of Senior Referees” – thus allowing them to officiate at the lower ends of professional football in Scotland. Further progression through the ranks is possible once this level has been attained.

Appointments - Team Leader Peter Peace

If you are a referee without a game, then contact the Appointments team leader. Local league secretaries are often short of a referee and will contact the Appointments Team Leader whose job it is to match up referees to matches. Peter is assisted by Ralph Gordon who can be contacted if Peter is unavailable.

Constitution - Team Leader Calum Murray

Provides advice to Council when requested on matters relating to the Constitution.

Social Team - Team Leader Mike Tumilty

Coordinates various events throughout the year including the annual dinner usually held in mid-February.

Web Team - Team Leader Gavin Ross

Webmaster responsible for the development and maintenance of the website. Suggestions or comments to webmaster@edinburghrefs.com

SFA Appointed Representatives

Referee Observers are appointed to undertake practical assessment during matches and play a pivotal role in developing referees at all grades.  We currently have three observers resident with our area: George Smith, Martin Clark and Ian Fyfe.

Martin Clark is our Association Manager appointed to act as the link between the Association and the SFA while Ian Fyfe serves on the SFA Referee Committee. Both Ian and Martin are invited to attend our Council Meetings.
